Dental Implants: The Long-Term Tooth Replacement

0653606001563822063.jpgWhen it comes to handling tooth loss, we know that our patients are looking for a restoration that is as close to a real tooth as possible. They want to feel confident in their appearance without others noticing that they have false teeth—something made possible by dental implants!

From the Fishers, IN, dental office of Drs. Gary and Becky Walker, read on to find out if dental implants are right for you.

How does a dental implant work?

A dental implant is a small metal post that is embedded into the jawbone in order to provide the same stability as a real tooth root. This positioning also provides the jawbone with the stimulation it needs to continue producing new bone cells and to prevent bone deterioration (a serious complication of untreated tooth loss).

What does a dental implant look like?

The implant itself is a small titanium post that is placed directly into the jaw where your missing tooth once stood (this part of the implant will not be visible). From there, our Fishers, IN, general dentist will place an abutment on top of the implant. The abutment’s job is to connect the implant with the false tooth (i.e. dental crown) which is cemented over the abutment to complete the restoration.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Since implants are the closest thing you can get to a real tooth, you better believe that they offer some pretty incredible benefits, including:

  • A life long restoration (if properly cared for)
  • The ability to eat anything you want without having to worry about your tooth
  • Preservation of bone health and prevention of bone loss
  • Support for the facial muscles
  • Prevention of facial sagging and premature aging
  • Functionality and look of a real tooth
